The 3rd NNU & HKIEd Inter-varsity English Speaking & Debating Contest

Attended The 3rd NNU & HKIEd Inter-varsity English Speaking & Debating Contest, which was held in our university this year of 2006.
Might be the only one being absent from the Military Theory class for that last night. Though I didn't really know what went through my mind. Anyway...as it turned out, it was well worth attending.
As I had arrived at the hall like, almost 50 min.'s early, I was lucky enough to choose a pleasant seat for watching.
Looking 'round I'd just say I loved the atmosphere and that it was amazing.
The topic was mainly 'bout whether the government should support luxurious consumption or not. It was a heated debating, really something.
Got impressed. Wonderful performance.
And I took some notes:
PRO
It's human desire for satisfaction, mentally and spiritually.
It's the motivation for living. Even to work harder.
The government is by the people, of the people and for the people. And people want the best goods and best services.
In this way people can benefit from the advanced technology.
It doesn't mean we do not do charity things.
Some money from the tax can be used as charity.
It helps improve the economy.
It makes it possible for people to experience the kind of life they want.
It's legal. People have the right to spend their own money as they please.
It's just another way of pursuing a better life.
There's nothing wrong with showing off.
CON
It's just a way to show people's status. It's not necessary.
How could we be happy staying comfortably in a 5-star hotel when someone else still has to spend their night miserably in the street? Think 'bout the starvation in Africa.
It's out of basic needs; people do not need that.
If people ever need any motivation, what 'bout the recognition from society and even praises from their lovers? Those can also be the motivation for living.
If it's because of the by-the-people-of-the-people-for-the-people government, if people only want the best goods, the best services, even the best T-shirts, people wouldn't even stand their cellphones not being the best and having the most various functions, and it wouldn't be of any value to pursue anything else but wealth.
Pay more attention to people's moral value.
Having the right to do shouldn't be the reason why people do things. There are some more other than people's own pleasure should be taken into consideration.
Glad I was able to catch it; even taking notes seemed fun.
Fortunate in my choice.

The government is of the people and for the people. Here people means the mass not the tiny portion that can consume luxurious. The government desn\'t need to support or inhibit the luxurious consuption, just let it go. Government has much more important thing to do.

To ensure that the money for luxurious consumption is fairly and legally obtained.
